Most press releases are about bonds or regulatory positions, but a visit to Times Square today revealed a rare story. When Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora cross the ring at the O2 Arena on April 4, it won’t just be a fight for victory. It’s more than that. The two 40-year-olds will celebrate a century of professional combat.
In a sport where elite fighters usually fight once a year, both men are entering their 50th professional bout on the same night.
This is proof that a brand of “old school” is fading in the mainstream. To put that number in perspective, it took Muhammad Ali 21 years to reach 50 fights. Wilder and Chisora have achieved in the modern era of high boxing records and a lot of suspension.
“War” Chisora, this is the end of the road. At the age of 42, he survived a recession that would have retired three younger men. Coming off a late fight win over Otto Wallin in 2025, Chisora is the fighter here. He spent his career as a great test, and he saw his 50th fight as a perfect final chapter in a legacy built on adversity.
For the 40-year-old Wilder, 50 is not the finish line. The former WBC heavyweight champion is trying to rebuild. After a difficult fall between 2021 and 2024, his knock in June 2025 of Tyrrell Herndon showed that the “equalizer” is still working.
Wilder isn’t looking for a graceful exit. That’s not what this fight is about. The Bronze Bomber is looking to use Chisora’s fight as a stepping stone to convince him to get back into the conversation with unification heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Promoters Amer Abdallah and Kalle Sauerland are hinting at the “shootout” nature of this matchup. While many see this as a celebration of two legends, this fight suggests something much darker: the loser of this 50th fight may put their gloves in the middle of the ring.
Wilder is spending his entire 2026 campaign on a man who specializes in brutal fights. If Chisora can pull off the “Bronze Bomber” in the late rounds, the 50th fight for both could end up being the last fight for the two.
