Emma Raducanu overturned a five-game deficit in the first set to advance to the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open with a straight sets victory over Kaya Juvan.
The British No. 1, in her second match since splitting with coach Francois Roig, dropped the first five games of the match against her Slovenian opponent before making a remarkable comeback.
From 5-0 down, Raducanu suddenly awoke from her slumber, winning 11 straight games to take control of the contest and set the stage for an impressive 7-5 6-1 victory that at one stage looked unlikely.
Raducanu faces a quick turnaround in Cluj-Napoca, with her quarter-final against Poland’s Maja Chwalinska scheduled for Thursday.
Addressing the crowd, Raducan, who is of Romanian heritage, said: “Thank you for your support, I really went through some difficult moments in the first set.
“Kaya played great tennis and immediately put me on my back. I thought I was aggressive with my shots, but I missed and I didn’t finish. At least I could say I was playing on my terms – that was the goal for me.
“I don’t think I’ve ever come back from 5-0 before, so that’s the first one that adds to the experience.
Looking ahead to her quarterfinals, Raducanu added: “I have to try to recover right away; there’s not much time to turn around. I hope the schedule is kind to me and I can find some energy.”
Boulter, Kartal to the respective quarter-finals
Katie Bolter advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ostrava Open.
The British No. 4, who has fallen sharply in the rankings after a disappointing 2025, defeated Viktorija Golubic 6-2 6-2.
It was her best performance for some time as she dominated her Swiss opponent throughout. In the round of 16, she will face local hope Linda Fruhwirtova.
Sonaj Kartal was lucky as she advanced to the quarter-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open.
Kartal was supposed to play against the first seed and the 9th tennis player in the world Belinda Benčić in a difficult second round draw.
But the Swiss withdrew due to illness and Kartal enjoyed a much calmer time against lucky loser Renata Zarazua, winning 6-0 6-3.
