Walt Animation’s “Zootopia” Sequel disney The studio took in $96 million in North America over the weekend and $156 million during the five-day Thanksgiving period, bringing global revenue to a staggering $556 million since opening on Wednesday, the studio estimated on Sunday.
This makes it the highest-grossing animated film ever to debut internationally, the fourth-highest global debut, and the highest-grossing international debut of 2025.
“Evil: Forever” Stayed in the air for the second weekend universal The film earned another $62.8 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, bringing its North American total to $270.4 million. The second half of the Wicked saga has already brought in $393 million at the international box office.
The combination of these two PG-rated sequels makes Thanksgiving weekend an exception in a dark year for movie theaters. The five-day holiday brought in a total of $290 million, including $188 million from Friday to Sunday.
This could be a blip, or it could be a sign that Hollywood could be salvaged by a strong performance at the box office this year, with movies like “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” still set to hit theaters in 2025.
“This is a great result and provides significant momentum at the box office as we enter the final four weeks of the year,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
“Zootopia 2” Nearly a decade after the original’s release, the film has exceeded box office expectations, grossing $75 million in its domestic debut in March.
Like the first film, its protagonists are bunny police officer Judy Hopps (played by Ginnifer Goodwin) and small-time liar fox Nick Wilde (played by Ginnifer Goodwin).Jason Bateman) in a city filled with comically domesticated wild animals.
Dergarabedian said the sequel represents “a beloved series that meets the needs of audiences around the world.”
It is the sixth largest movie released in North America in 2025. But its biggest market is China, which grossed $272 million, accounting for nearly half of the film’s global box office. No American-made animated film has had such a huge release. This is the second-best non-local film premiere in China ever, after Avengers: Endgame.
Such achievements were once almost commonplace for Hollywood in China. But in recent years, as geopolitical relations have become unstable, box office results have become unpredictable at best. With a few exceptions, such as “Jurassic World,” Hollywood has effectively canceled investment in Chinese theaters and realigned blockbuster budgets accordingly.
The huge bounty on “Zootopia 2” in China may be an anomaly, or it may be a sign of the ice age thawing. In recent years, China has censored movies released in theaters, preferring domestic films. Earlier this year, the domestic blockbuster “Nezha 2” grossed US$1.8 billion at the Chinese box office.
“Zootopia 2” has a clear path to its big start in China. The first “Zootopia,” known there as “Zootopia,” was an unexpected hit, grossing $236 million at the box office. Shanghai Disneyland has a dedicated movie theme park.
“Wicked: Forever Good” appears to be unaffected by cutthroat competition, as Universal Pictures’ gamble of splitting Broadway’s “The Wizard of Oz” into two movies continues to pay off. The film’s weekend global box office total was $92.2 million.
“Hamnet” is sure to be a staple of awards season following the holiday season, performing strongly in its limited debut and eventually cracking the top 10. From 119 theaters, it grossed $1.35 million Wednesday through Sunday and $880,000 over the weekend, for an average of more than $11,000 per theater. Ting Zhao’s Shakespearean tale, starring Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal, will unfold next weekend.
