Two goals in four second-half minutes helped a much-changed Leeds United come from behind to beat Derby County 3-1 at Pride Park and book a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
An upset appeared on the scorecards at half-time after Ben Brereton Diaz fired the Championship side into the lead in the 35th minute, moments after Jacob Weidel Zetterstrom had denied Joel Pirro from the penalty spot.
But the visitors, who made eight changes from their 4-3 defeat at Newcastle United in midweek, went in front after the break, deservedly reversing the tie in the 10th minute of the second period.
First, Wilfried Gnonto unleashed an unstoppable drive past Derby’s previously unbeaten Swedish keeper at his near post after Piroe’s clever dummy opened up the home side’s defence.
And then a lovely flowing move from Daniel Farke’s in-form team featuring Lukas Nmecha, Noah Okafor and the impressive Piroe ended with Zetterstrom only parrying the latter’s effort from the edge of the area, with the alert Ao Tanaka saving the ball from close range.
That quick-fire double knocked the stuffing out of the derby, 17 places below Leeds in the football pyramid, and the visitors recorded a deserved win in stoppage time when substitute James Justin finished off a counter-attack as his side took a place in the hat for Monday night’s fourth-round draw.
