Demi Moore is remembering the first days of work with Tom Cruise activated A few good men while she was almost eight months pregnant.
Speaking Saturday, Oct. 25, during a Q&A at the New York Film Festival, Moore, 62, recalled reading lines from the film with co-star Cruise, now 63, and the director. Rob Reiner.
“I think Tom was pretty embarrassed,” shared Moore. “I actually felt good. I moved though, didn’t I? But I could tell I felt it was a little uncomfortable.”
Moore was pregnant at the time with her and ex-husband Bruce Willis‘ daughter Scout, now 34. She speculated that Cruise may have been uncomfortable as it was unusual for a co-star to have children at the time, explaining that there was pressure to choose between having a career or being a mother, but never both.
“It’s one of the many things, for me, that I felt didn’t make sense. And so I challenged it to say, you know, ‘Why not?’ Why can’t you have both?” he said. “But with that, I think, I put a lot of pressure on myself to, in a sense, prove that it was possible.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Cruise’s rep for comment.
Moore shared that he became “a bit of a hit” to prove that he could balance both his role as a father and as an actor.
“Now I look back at that time and I’m like, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’ And what was I trying to prove? But it wasn’t as supported as it is today,” the star said. “You know, breastfeeding and then blocking and rehearsing a scene.”
Moore, who shared that the next generation won’t have to “try as hard” as motherhood is now “supported” in Hollywood, recalled feeling like she did. be physically fit for the movie before Scout’s arrival.
“I was going to be in a military uniform, and I probably expected too much and I started working out and trying to get in shape even before I was born,” Moore said. “I did a two-and-a-half-hour walk the day my water broke. I did a 24-mile bike ride and then danced at a reggae club, which is why she came two-and-a-half weeks early.”
Along with Scout, Moore shares daughters Rumer, 37, and Tallulah, 31, with Willis. (The actor is also father to daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, who he shares with his wife. Emma Heming Willis.)
Since sharing Willis’ diagnosis with aphasia in 2022, Moore has been sincere about supporting her ex-husband while battling a rare form of dementia.
“It’s so important to just meet them where they are. Don’t have any particular expectations that they have to be who they were or who you want them to be,” Moore said during a podcast appearance in September. “When you do that, I find there’s an incredible sweetness and something that’s soft and tender and loving. Maybe it’s more playful and childlike in a sense because they need a lot more care.”
