Hi everything! This is Cheng Ting-Fang, your Techasia host, saying Hello from Taipei!
I just got back from a short trip to Hong Kong, where I attended a dinner ceremony at Gala dinner and awards. I am excited to share some awesome news to you: Nikkei Asia won the Primary Prize to Report Technology From the Society of Publisher in Asia (SOPA) – a famous competition puts us in the largest publication of Global News such as Bloomberg, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal.
I brightly remember the journey that this winning the award-winning attached. It’s a lot of hard work and collaboration with my bad partners. A little anecddote I want to share involve Subsea cable map We made, tracking Chinese investments and joining Undersea cables starting in the 1990s. This project begins to dig off decidedly decidedly decomposed Chinese Governments and Telecom documents to identify each Chinese involvement cable. We need the real map map data to allow our art team to imagine and describe these wiring.
At one point, it’s about the project when we are about to know that map data will cost $ 20,000, more than our budget. But after talking to my colleagues’ strategy, I was nervous to pick up the paper specialist paper and managed to negotiate the price of $ 800 for the data we needed. Lauly Li, Shunsuke Tableta, Tsubasa Suruga and I interviewed many Chinese executives and foreign locations within the Subsea cable Asia, seldom heard in the global media.
Another Standout project is our Mapping China to China Electronics Supply Chainpromoting areas where the country has established competitions in the options of global leaders. To remember six years since Huawei has been added to the US entity list, it is odd to how global supplies to global supply.
The launch of that part is not as smooth as we expected. It includes breaking the news Nissan and Honda are in reference to mention, and facing a technical glitch that prevents our graphics from the first 50 hours of the story. But once solved, we have received a lot of feedback from the industry for the depths and details of our reporting.
The third package story looks at how China builds a Competent Advanced Display Industry Was previously dominated by Samsung.
There’s a Taiwan saying to go, “eating the tube from the bottom,” which means every bite can be more sweet than the end. And another familiar line takes my feelings: “Every cloud has a silver lining.”
I want to express my deep appreciation to our art team, minjung Kim and Michael Tsang led, for changing our raw research and reporting clear graphics that are often found to be found. Special gratitude to Katherine Creel, our Tech Editor, and the entire Nikkei Asia Editorial team for their everlasting support and collaboration to make these projects.
Hong Kong always brings memories remember. I have never returned to the city since 2019, before Covid, and some ways it feels like walking in a time capsule, especially in time terminals. Most taxis, for example, still getting cash – no apple or credit card fees. I was lucky to have found some remaining Hong Kong dollars in an old purse before the trip.
After the awards ceremony, I associate with colleagues from Nikkei and financial period in the chief’s piresy clubs. Over evening drinks, I reminded me that Hong Kong is an important hub for international media. While many outlets have since been transferred to Singapore, Seoul, or Taipei due to the geopolitics transfer, the docking port and historical architecture spoken to better old old days.
