Not long after Anderson Cooper began hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage from Times Square in 2002, the news show often became the news.
In 2007, Kathy Griffin joined as official co-presenter of the journalist. While the unlikely duo brought the laughs, Griffin made waves annually for his dirty jokes and cursing. Still, the network stood by him, until May 2017 when Griffin was criticized for posing with a fake severed head of the time…President Donald Trump.
After Cooper tweeted that he was “horrified by the photo shoot,” calling it “clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate,” the network cut ties with Griffin.
Cooper continued to keep coverage light by teaming up with the friend Andy Cohen as the official co-host of the 2017-18 broadcast, and the two began their tradition of taking pictures to celebrate the show
A few years later, Cohen headlined during the 2021-22 issue when cast a shadow to the mayor Bill de Blasio i Ryan Seacrest. The outburst resulted in a alcohol ban for a year for both Cooper and Cohen.
