Celebrities, among them Ryan Reynolds i Kevin Harthave covered the distance and completed races of 26.2 miles.
After witnessing the New York Marathon as a spectator, Reynolds decided to give it a try in 2008. Before his first major race, he wrote an essay for the Huffington Postusing humor to explain why he chose to run.
“Every other day I work out. I run like a bastard all morning. Since high school discovery, torture hasn’t been this effective,” he wrote in November 2008. “Why the hell would I do it voluntarily? Let it be known right up front, I’m not a runner. I’m a running joke. Waking up at 4:30 in the morning and running has not been 23 miles to 23 miles.
The Green Lantern the actor continued: “Although I’ve never given birth to a professional basketball player through one of my tear ducts, I can’t imagine a worse way to start the day. Conversely, there are people who have real problems. I digress…”
Reynolds explained that she willingly signed up for the event after meeting Michael J. Fox and saw its “overwhelming force” first hand. The Canadian actor, who earned money for Parkinson’s research through his run, noted that his father’s battle with Parkinson’s also inspired him to run a marathon.
Bachelor alum Tayshia Adams, on the other hand, she chose to return to running amid the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 after a car accident in college left her with a pelvic injury that affected her ability to run. He ran his first marathon in New York City in 2021.
