Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro: a historic breakthrough




On January 1, Bulgaria officially joined the eurozone, becoming the 21st country to use the single European currency. The introduction of the euro brings hopes of major economic benefits to Sofia, but it also comes at a time of deep political polarization and massive anti-corruption protests, which have culminated in the resignation of both the country’s government and president.
