Season 4 of Bridgerton addresses Francesca’s constant orgasm problems, but they have nothing to do with it with his sexuality after his love interest Michaela gender swap.
After the show returned on Thursday, January 29, showrunner Jess Brownell weighed on Francesca’s (Hannah Dodd) inability to “peak” with husband Joan (Victor Alli).
“We want to more organically explore different kinds of intimacy for different characters,” Brownell said. variety. “Specifically, Francesca’s story really excites me because I think on the show, obviously, people are always having simultaneous magical orgasms, and that fantasy is a lot of fun, but it also doesn’t accurately represent the experience of most women.”

“I hope it’s very clear from our narrative that we’re not trying to imply that just because she can’t have an orgasm that there’s something wrong with her relationship with John,” she continued. “They just have a different kind of slow-growing passion. Their situation is very common, and I think it’s great to represent all kinds of love and different kinds of intimacy on screen.”
She continued, “It’s probably a combination of the fact that it’s a common problem and also a problem that feels really specific to who Francesca is as a character. I wouldn’t say it’s John vs. Michaela necessarily, but I think Fran is someone who’s out of touch with herself, literally or metaphorically, and that may be part of the reason why she can’t orgasm.”

Liam Daniel/NetflixJulia Quinn‘s When he was evil focuses on Francesca’s marriage to now-husband John before his shocking death. Francesca would find love again with John’s cousin, Michael. The series, however, changed Michael to Michaela (Masali Baduza), during the season 3 finale.
After the backlash, Quinn showed his support for the change while revealing the only detail asked to remain from his book.
“I made it clear that it was extremely important to me that Francesca’s ongoing love for John be shown on screen,” she wrote via Instagram in 2024. “When I wrote When He was Wicked, I actually had to fight to have the first four chapters, which establish that love. My editor was worried that writing about Fran’s love for John would take Michael’s role out of the eventual romance novel.”
She added: “I felt that if she didn’t show how deeply she loved John and how much Michael, her cousin, loved her too, then her feelings of guilt about falling in love after John died didn’t make sense. I didn’t want to just tell the reader that they loved her. I wanted the reader to feel that. I’m convinced that Francesca’s most emotional season will now be the most emotional bridge. the heartbreaking story of the show, just like When He Was Wicked has always been the real tearjerker of Bridgerton’s book series.
Brownell has since advocated as Francesca’s the marriage to John is over.
“I would like to separate (Francesca’s) peak issues from her relationship with John,” she mentioned in a separate interview with TVLine. “Its peak issues are a representation of the millions of women for whom orgasm through penetrative sex alone is simply impossible. I know we’re a fantasy show, but when it comes to sex, I’m very interested in bringing some degree of representation of reality. That level of pulling back the curtain on the mysteries of sex has always been part of the show.”
Brownell urged fans not to blame Francesca’s orgasm problems on her husband. He also praised John’s “green flags” after discovering Francesca’s conversation with him in the bedroom.
“I think the love between them is very real,” she shared. “Love comes in many forms and it’s important to leave that open for viewers to understand what the specific type of love that Fran and John share is.”
