The mother of the Texas A&M sophomore Brianna Aguilera he believes foul play was the cause of his daughter’s death.
In an interview with people published on Tuesday, December 2 Estefania Rodríguez said he “disagrees” with the Austin Police Department’s determination that there are “no indications of suspicious circumstances” in the death of Aguilera, who died Saturday, Nov. 29 at age 19.
Rodriguez told the outlet, “I’m thinking someone pushed her over the balcony, or when my daughter drinks, she tends to (fall asleep) and she’s so thin and frail that she can’t handle the alcohol. I think maybe that could have been it, and they probably got scared and threw her over the balcony, or pushed her.”
Local news KBTX reported on Monday, December 1 that Aguilera dead in a student apartment complex near the University of Texas. Authorities in Austin confirmed at the time that his death occurred early Saturday morning, just before 1 a.m.
The police department released a statement about its findings peoplewhich said, “At this time, the incident is not being investigated as a homicide and there are no indications of suspicious circumstances. The cause of death will be determined by the Travis County Coroner’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.”
The outlet said the police department told Rodriguez they “believe her daughter’s death was suicidal or accidental.”
Rodriguez said in response, “That’s when it really upset me because I was, like, my daughter didn’t kill herself. I would know. She’s not suicidal. Why would she? She was living her best life. She loved life. I mean, she loved going to school. She wanted to be a lawyer. I mean, it was something that I was, you don’t put it that way.”
Rodríguez, who joined his family to create one GoFundMe following Aguilera’s death to finance funeral expenses, he also said people that her daughter “was at a party on the 17th floor … with approximately 14 other people.”
He noted that he believes “a fight may have broken out between Brianna and others,” alleging that Aguilera “had an argument with a girl over her boyfriend.”
Aguilera’s death was reflected by his family in the description of the GoFundMe page. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin, Brianna Aguilera,” the caption read. “Brianna graduated from United High School in Laredo, TX where she was a seasoned cheerleader and received Magna Cum Lade honors. She was pursuing her dream of becoming a lawyer and attending the Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M, her dream was always to be an AGGIE! She was one year away from getting her Aggie ring.”
He also noted, “Details about what happened next are unclear, and his mother is still waiting for answers.”
The crowdfunding effort had raised $37,735, surpassing its $12,000 goal, at press time. A comment from one of the page’s organizers, shared on Monday, said: “We have reached our goal, Brianna will be home with all her loved ones soon. I will leave donations open so my aunt can comfortably mourn this unimaginable loss.”
