Jadier Herrera stopped Ricardo Nunez in the eighth round on January 10 to win the World Boxing Council’s interim lightweight title on Saturday night at the Rudolf Weber-Arena in Oberhausen, Germany.
The fight was based on the Agit Kabayel vs. Damian Knyba card and match Herrera, the 23-year-old undefeated southpaw, with an old opponent known for his weight and strength. Nunez came to the front early and took the early rounds. Some reports on the sidelines of the tournament had him dropping to second, adding tension to a fight that was more competitive than expected.
As the rounds wore on, Herrera began to dominate. His speed and shot selection slowed Nunez’s progress and changed the pace. By the middle rounds, the momentum had clearly shifted in Herrera’s favor.
The end came in the eighth. Herrera hit Nunez with a series of punches, forcing the referee to step in. During the break, Herrera fired another right hand that took Nunez down and briefly added to the confusion before the stoppage was confirmed.
The decision was a discussion, but the outcome was certain. Herrera remains undefeated and walks away with the interim lightweight title. With the division in motion and the entire band potentially changing hands, its status is now hard to ignore.
This was not a perfect performance, but it was necessary.
