Eight people have been injured in clashes with ‘terrorists’ in disputed areas of Sudan and South Sudan.

At least six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed in a “terrorist” attack on a United Nations base in Abyei, a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan, the Bangladeshi military said.
Eight more people were injured in Saturday’s attack, the military said.

“The situation is still volatile and encounters with terrorists are ongoing,” the army said in a statement, adding that officials were working to provide medical treatment and rescue operations to the injured.
There was no immediate comment from the UN mission.
The attack comes a month after the UN Security Council Voted to renew The UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), the peacekeeping mission in the oil-rich conflict region of Sudan and South Sudan, for another year.
Bangladesh is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions and has long deployed its troops in Sudan and the disputed volatile region of Abyei in South Sudan.
UNISFA’s peacekeeping mission was first deployed in 2011.
UNISFA’s 4,000 police and soldiers are tasked with protecting civilians in a region plagued by frequent armed clashes.
Abyei region is divided into two distinct factions with different loyalties.
The Ngok Dinka tribe has strong ethnic, cultural and linguistic ties to the Dinka of South Sudan, while the Miseria are a nomadic Arab tribe linked to Sudan.
Abyei’s fate was a key feature of the 2005 peace deal reached between the Sudanese government and rebels that ended the then-civil war and paved the way for South Sudan’s independence.
However, unrest in disputed areas including South Sudan continues even as Sudan is ravaged by a war. A more recent civil war which erupted in April 2023, when two generals began fighting for control of the country.
