The quake comes two months after the deadliest earthquake in Afghanistan’s recent history, which killed thousands of people.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit northern Afghanistan two months after killing thousands of people.

The USGS said overnight Sunday into Monday that the earthquake occurred at 12:59 local time (20:29 GMT) at a revised depth of 28 km (17 mi) at Kholm near the town of Mazar-e-Sharif in the Hindu Kush region.

The agency initially assigned a depth of 10 km (six miles).

The country’s National Disaster Management Agency said casualty and damage reports would be shared later.

On August 31, the deadliest earthquake in Afghanistan’s history, a magnitude of 6.0, struck. It hit the east of the countryMore than 2,200 people were killed.

Earthquakes are common in the country, especially near the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates meet.

Since 1900, northeast Afghanistan has been hit by 12 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7, according to British Geological Survey seismologist Brian Baptie.
