The Eastlands owns and operates Mystic Camp Mystic, The Christian Girls’Summn Camp, Since 1939. The camp was founded in 1926. Dick and his wife Tweety purchased the camp in 1974 and have served as executive director for more than 50 years. Officials said the Islamic wife was found safe at home.

Dick Eastland is known for participating in the involvement of the Sikel County community and serves on the Hunter Independent School District Council and directs youth sports, especially the Sikel County Little League and Sikel County Little Dribblers. Eastland also particularly survives brain cancer.

On July 4, severe flooding in the Texas Hill country caused the Guadalupe River to rise more than 25 feet in less than an hour, catching many campers and employees off guard. Officials said 27 campers and counselors died at Mystic Camp, including young girls from various states. As of July 7, at least 10 campers and one counselor are still missing. The death toll from floods has reached at least 95 across the state, with 75 reportedly killed in Kerr County. The Texas National Guard and local authorities deployed helicopters, ships and drones to find survivors and recover missing persons.
Survivors describe the chaotic scene as staff members’ efforts to move campers to higher ground. “We went to bed and thought it was just a normal thunderstorm,” 16-year-old camper Callie McAlary, Tell Fox News. “For one minute, you saw lightning attacks next to the cabin, and beside you, you heard the water coming.”
Camp officials and survivors won Eastland and staff during the disaster. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has since visited Mystic Camp to declare a state of emergency and promised to continue supporting the search and rescue operations. “I urge every Texan to join my prayer this Sunday – because those who are still missing, restore the safety of our communities and those on the frontline, Abbott said in a statement.
