A woman died moments after giving birth at a homeless camp


A woman has been charged with the murder of a newborn baby after she gave birth to the child at a homeless camp in California.

The Ventura County District Attorney announced a news release on Tuesday, February 10, which Marisol Flores he faces a charge of first-degree murder, as well as a charge of assault on a child causing death.

Prosecutors said Flores, 30, allegedly gave birth at a homeless encampment along West Vineyard Avenue in Oxnard, Calif., on Sunday, February 8.

A day before the alleged murder, witnesses claimed to have seen a pregnant Flores around the homeless camp. Witnesses later saw her on Feb. 8 and noted that she was no longer pregnant and did not appear to have any children with her, according to prosecutors.

“Flores is accused of having killed the baby shortly after giving birth,” the statement said. “The baby’s body was discovered inside the camp and showed visible signs of blunt force trauma.”

After the baby’s body was discovered, a 911 call was made “regarding the birth of a child and the complications involved in child birth,” according to a press release shared by the Oxnard Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the scene and fire and EMS personnel arrived just after 11am. First responders attempted to perform life-saving measures on the infant, however the infant could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, police said Flores was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

While on scene, emergency responders “noted a suspicious injury to the infant and shared their findings with law enforcement personnel on scene,” according to the news release.

Investigators from the department’s Family Protection and Major Crimes units were assigned to investigate the case and found “additional information that led them to believe Flores was responsible for killing her one-day-old son.” However, the press release does not say what that information is or what it revealed.

After the investigation began, Flores was arrested and taken into custody on February 8.

Flores is being held on $500,000 bond, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s press release.

It is currently unclear whether Flores has entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest.

Flores is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment hearing on the afternoon of Friday, February 13.
