today‘s Savannah Guthrie and her family are searching for answers amid the mother’s disappearance Nancy GuthriePima County Sheriff Chris Nanos explains exclusively Us Weekly.
“As you can imagine, this is tough for all of them,” Nanos said we on Monday, February 2, when they asked him how the family is doing. “They lean on each other. They’re very cooperative with us and everything we’re doing. They’re involved and engaged. It’s tough, there’s no doubt about it.”
Nanos noted that Savannah’s sister, Annie Guthriehe was the last to see his mother. (Nancy shared daughters Savannah, 54, and Annie and her son Cameron with her late husband Carloswho died at age 49 of a heart attack.)
When asked if Annie raised any red flags about her mother’s behavior, Nanos replied: “No, we don’t have anything like that, no.”
Nanos went on to note that “you never want to lose hope” in the middle of an investigation.
“We don’t want anyone to lose hope. So it’s always there, and that’s a good thing. But in the same sense, in the same way that there’s hope, there’s also things pointing at us that say, ‘This lady is in danger,'” he said. “Even if he left that house and was still with us, we’ll be around 24 hours. We’ve talked to his medical professionals, but we know his element, and we know the medications he needs and running out of his medications … can be fatal. And 24 hours later … time is (of) the essence here.”
On Sunday, February 1, the news came out that Nancy was reported missing by a family member who called 911. Nanos shared at a news conference Monday that a friend from Nancy’s church noticed she was absent from a service and called one of her sons.
The friend then went to Nancy’s house and “did some research and realized, ‘We need help,’ and they called 911.”
While Savannah was absent from Monday’s broadcast of the today show, Sheinelle Jones appeared next to it Craig Melvin during the first hour to convey a statement from his family.
“We want to get straight to what is a deeply personal story for us,” Melvin, 46, said. “Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona.”
A statement from Savannah noted, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our beloved mother. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-49001.”
Jenna Bush Hagerfor his part, he became emotional during the fourth hour of the program. Bush Hager, 44, went on to share that Nancy “takes the daily medication” she needs “for survival” and is probably “off her medication” at the moment.
“We are thinking of our dear, beloved Savannah and her entire family right now,” Bush Hager said. “Our prayers obviously go out to Savannah.”
At an initial news conference Monday, Nanos shared that there were “some concerns” about what was found in Nancy’s home. When asked if foul play was suspected, Nano noted that he was “not ruling it out.”
“We’ve pretty much just launched everything we can,” Nanos added, noting that search and rescue and criminal investigation teams were called in to help along with drones, dogs and a helicopter.
In a separate press conference, authorities said they could tell Nancy that she “didn’t go out on her own” and that they “don’t see this as a search mission” as much as a crime scene. “She couldn’t walk 50 meters by herself,” they added.
Nanos went on to note that he does not believe there is an active threat to the public at this time.
“Let’s go investigate this neighborhood, maybe there’s a prowler (that’s been seen) around,” he said. “There is still a lot of work to be done. We have no indication that the public is still in danger.”
