Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has revealed that after learning more about the crime scene, he concluded Savannah Guthriethe mother, Nancy Guthrie — who has been missing since Saturday night — is in danger.
“We don’t want anyone to lose hope,” Nanos said Us Weekly exclusively on Monday February 2. “But in the same sense, in the same way that there is hope, there are also things that point to us that say: ‘This lady is in danger'”.
“It has to do with what was described to us about the scene,” he continued. “I’ve been doing this for 50 years. When something goes wrong, it doesn’t look good.”
He added: “Something unusual happened in that house that made us say, ‘Wow…something’s not right here.’ Something doesn’t add up.”
Search and rescue teams were deployed with drones and dogs to search for the 84-year-old man. Authorities have also had the support of volunteers, the Border Patrol and the homicide team.
“He reports to me every day, sometimes multiple times, about different search and rescue operations. And we rarely report homicide,” Nanos said. “But this one came up with information that I was concerned about, that I just thought, ‘We have to do this from two angles.’ I have to do the search and rescue team (and) do their mission. But I have to bring in my homicide team because there’s something not right here. And I need them to start their criminal part of the investigation and we’re going to meet.”
He continued: “We’re really hoping it’s a search and rescue mission and we find her and she’s safe and sound. But we’d be silly, it’d be unfair not to. look at what’s in front of us and say: ‘We must act and we must do it'”.

Nanos explained that Nancy’s family “wasn’t alerted” to her disappearance until around 11 a.m. the next morning, and police didn’t notice until 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, leading officials to investigate a timeline “from 9:30 p.m. to 11 (a.m.).” like the when window Nancy disappeared.
Nanos noted in a separate interview with CBS News on Monday that he believes the mother of three was “kidnapped,” telling the station, “She didn’t walk away from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
