Chappell Roan almost discovers everything the 2026 Grammys — but she doesn’t understand why the Internet thinks she’s so big.
“Laughing because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” the 27-year-old pop star he wrote via Instagram on Monday, February 2, sharing several photos of her look. “The look is really so cool and weird. I suggest you just exercise your free will, it’s really fun and silly :D.”
She added: “Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”
Roan went out to the Sunday, February 1, award ceremony in a custom Mugler suit that looked like held by nipple rings. Her makeup artist later confirmed that “Hot to Go!” singer was actually wear prosthetic nipplesso the look wasn’t as bare as it initially seemed.
On the red carpet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Roan covered up in a matching cape that hid her bare chest. Once inside, it was a second Rodarte look that wasn’t quite as revealing as he presented this year’s trophy for Best New Artist.
Roan won his first Grammy last year, taking home the award for Best New Artist after dominating the airwaves with his debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess. This year, she was nominated for album of the year and best pop solo performance for “The Subway.” She lost Kendrick Lamar i SZA by “Luther” and Lola Young for “Messy,” respectively.
After Roan’s look barely made waves on the red carpet, her makeup artist, Andrew Dahlinghe said Marie Claire that he and the singer were going for “medieval fantasy” with the outfit, which also included large fake tattoos on Roan’s back and chest.
“We started with this very archival moment, full and bare,” Dahling explained. “Once the tattoos came into play, it all became very medieval, but in a real way. It’s still fantasy and otherworldly, but grounded.”
Since Chappell Roan released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in September 2023, she’s become as famous for her idiosyncratic fashion as her bops. Although Roan has a short relationship with the Grammys, he has never been afraid to express himself at the event. During her Best New Artist speech last year, she called out the music industry for not supporting young artists, noting that her label dropped her just before the coronavirus pandemic and she lost her health care.
“It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system, and so dehumanized by not having health insurance,” she recalled. “And if my label had prioritized the health of the artist, I could have been paid attention by a company that I was giving everything to.”
When former music executive Jeff Rabhan called his speech “ill-informed” in a guest column The Hollywood ReporterRoan called him out via Instagram, hinting that he would donate $25,000 to support struggling artists.
“Mr. Rabhan, I love how in the article you said ‘put your money where your mouth is,'” she wrote at the time. “Genius!!! Let’s link and build together and see if you can do the same.”
