While artists included Bad Bunny i Billie Eilish made bold statements about US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Grammy 2026, Jelly roll is silent, for now.
Jelly Roll (real name Jason DeFord) declined to offer his take on the tense climate in America after picking up three awards at the music awards show on Sunday, February 1, including Best Contemporary Country Album for your registration Beautifully broken.
The 41-year-old singer was asked by reporters backstage in the press room if he wanted to comment on “what’s going on in the country right now,” to which he replied, “Not really.”
“So that’s the truth, and I’m glad somebody’s asking because I love talking about these things and people care to hear my opinion, but so I can tell you that people shouldn’t care to hear my opinion,” Jelly Roll told reporters.
He continued: “You know, I’m an idiot. I haven’t looked hard enough. I haven’t had a phone in 18 months.”
Jelly Roll admitted, “I’m so out of touch with what’s going on.”
“I grew up in a house of crazy pandemonium. I didn’t even know politics was real until I was twenty years old in prison,” the “Son of a Sinner” singer said. “Like, that’s how out of touch (you are) when you grew up in a household of drug addicts. You think we had common calls about what’s going on in rural politics? Like, we’re just trying to find a way to survive, man, you know?”
Jelly Roll said he “has a lot to say,” though, and will share his thoughts next week.
“I’m going to go through it next week, and everybody’s going to hear exactly what I have to say about it in the loudest and clearest way I’ve ever spoken in my life. So, I’m looking forward to it,” he added.
In addition to Best Contemporary Country Album, Jelly Roll also took home Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Amen” with Shaboozey and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for their performance Lake Brandon“Hard Fought Hallelujah” from “Hard Fought Hallelujah”.
While accepting the award for Best Contemporary Country Album, Jelly Roll got emotional when he gave a shout out to his wife, Bunny Xowith whom he previously posed on the red carpet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
“First of all, Jesus, I hear you and I hear you. Lord, I hear you. Lord,” he said. “Secondly, I want to thank my beautiful wife. I would never have changed my life without you. I would have ended up dead or in jail. I would have killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus. I thank you.”
Other stars, including Bad Bunny, talked about ICE on stage Sunday.
“Before I thank God, I’m going to say ICE out,” Bunny said Sunday while accepting the award for best urban music album for I should have taken more pictures. “We are not savages, we are not animals, we are not aliens. We are human and we are Americans.”
“I want to say to people, I know it’s hard not to hate these days, and I thought we were contaminated; I don’t know how to say it in English,” continued the singer, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio), referring to the word “contaminated.”
