This year marks the 15th anniversary of game of thronesone of the biggest hits ever HBO Max.
It’s understandable that HBO tried to keep the franchise alive House of the Dragon and the recently released A knight of the seven kingdoms.
It is based on the latter George RR Martinis popular Tales of Dunk and Egg novels
Watch with us you’ve seen the first two episodes, and now we’re going to try to address the burning question that brought you here: is A knight of the seven kingdoms a worthy game of thrones spin off?
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is well cast
Casting is everything when it comes to big budget series. All the special effects and elaborate sets can’t hide a show’s flaws if the lead actors aren’t up to the challenge of carrying a series. Fortunately for A knight of the seven kingdomsformer rugby player Peter Claffey embodies Ser Duncan the Tall as an eternal underdog despite his great height.
Being 6’5 certainly helps Claffey look physically believable, but it’s his portrayal of the endearing character of Dunk that holds the most promise. For someone who has only been a professional actor for four years, that’s pretty impressive.
Claffey’s co-star, Dexter Sol Ansellhe is only 11 years old and yet has more acting experience than his on-screen mentor. Ansell is also one of the biggest surprises of the show, because this kid has a lot of charisma. It’s hard not to think of him the same way Sophie Turner i Maisie Williamsboth played important roles game of thrones as children before bursting into greater stardom.
The show has yet to reveal Egg’s secret, but Ansell convincingly conveys his true background through his facial reactions. This is something you can notice in Episode 2 when Egg suddenly decides he’d rather not be so exposed. Ansell also has a very good relationship with Claffey, which should serve both of them well if this series has a long run.

HBO MaxAmong the rest of the cast, the standout performer is Daniel Ingswho plays Ser Lyonel Baratheon as a Robert Downey Jr. of Western It’s the kind of supporting role that may land Ings some bigger parts in the future, because this show is animated whenever he’s on screen.
Is “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” a comedy or a drama?
The biggest weakness that A knight of the seven kingdoms it has is that things are constantly put in there to justify the TV-MA rating of the show. (Last week short glimpse of full frontal male nudity that stands out in more ways than one!) Other than those moments, the series seems like it could live comfortably in the PG-13 action realm. But almost immediately after the opening scene, the show featured Claffey’s character defecating on screen in graphic fashion. It was intended as a separate comic, but it definitely felt out of place.
The characters also casually drop F-bombs, which keeps the show’s adult rating firmly in place. There haven’t been any scenes of over-the-top violence yet, but there are still some duels left for the remaining episodes of the season. Still, it honestly feels like this show could have been a gateway for younger viewers game of thrones not dealing with adult content. Tonally, it feels out of place in this series. Through two episodes, this show feels more like a comedy than a drama.
The scale of the show is considerably smaller than Game of Thrones

HBO MaxHouse of the Dragon may not be as beloved as its predecessor, but no one can claim that it does not have a story worthy of the scope of game of thrones. If you’re expecting the same kind of grand epic from this series, you’ll be disappointed. Dunk and Egg’s story centers around a jousting tournament, and the only bets so far center around Dunk’s all-or-nothing bet on himself. If you lose a match in the tournament, you will have to surrender your armor to the winner and will not be able to pay for it back.
The appeal of this series is based on whether you like Dunk and Egg, and it seems to be more character driven than the previous two shows. It’s a well-made show, and the production values seem very high. This series will probably never come close to the popularity of game of thronesbut so far so nice. We’ll have to watch more episodes to determine if it’s worth sticking with the show that spawned it. For now, the jury is still out.
