Annie Murphy has broken his silence after his first Schitt’s Creek tv mom, Catherine O’Harahe died at the age of 71.
“Ha-ha-HAAAA?!?! Her laugh was a perpetual ‘Yes, I’ challenging anyone who heard her to join in and be as delighted as she was,” Murphy, 39, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, January 31. “God, we were lucky to have her.”
Us Weekly confirmed on Friday, January 30 that O’Hara died after a short illness.
“Prolific multi-award winning actress, writer and comedian Catherine O’Hara died today at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness,” O’Hara’s agency, Creative Artists Agency, said in a statement. “The family will hold a private celebration of life.”
O’Hara played matriarch Moira Rose in Canada Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020, for which he won an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe trophy, and several acting awards. Schitt’s Creek also highlighted Eugene Levy like Moira’s husband, as well as Dan Levy and Murphy as the two descendants of Roses. (Father-son duo Eugene, 79, and Dan, 42, also co-created Schitt’s Creek.)
“She would never have dared to call herself a teacher (too self-deprecating, too Canadian), but shit, if I was a student,” Murphy recalled of O’Hara in his social media tribute. “Here are a few notes from Coles for those who also want to study: Always laugh. Jokes first. How they look is how they feel in your bones. When you find the people you love and they make you laugh, stay with your lovers and laugh.”
He continued: “Everyone on set is part of the community that (ideally) wants to do something great: treat them as such. Make suggestions, even if it means outdoing yourself sometimes. Acknowledge if it doesn’t work. Appreciate those who appreciate it when it does.”

“Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today. I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over 50 years,” Eugene. he said we in a statementin tribute to his long-time collaborator. “From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the films we made Guest Christo our six glorious years later Schitt’s CreekI loved our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. I will miss her.”
Eugene’s son, Dan, too issued a statement of his own
“What a gift to have been able to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance all these years,” Dan wrote via Instagram. “Having spent more than fifty years working with my father, Catherine was extended family before she played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish all the fun memories I was lucky enough to make with her.”
O’Hara is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two children, in addition to the late star’s siblings.
