Paris Hilton is talking about the “cruel” and “despicable” criticism that she and Britney Spears faced in the early 2000s.
Appears on Thursday, January 29, episode of I’ve never said that before with Tommy DiDario, Hilton said she and Spears, both 44, connected over shared past experiences.
The Simple Life alum described constantly criticized after finding fame at a young age as a “very isolating” experience that few people can relate to. Hilton noted that the singer is one of the few people she can relate to.
“I was with Britney a few weeks ago for her birthday in Mexico and we were just talking how cruel and mean people were then,” Hilton said. “And she’s someone who can relate to that. Very few people can. It’s made us both so strong.”
In the episode, Hilton explained that she used her blonde, mute public persona that she became famous for The Simple Life as a shield against attacks.
“I think everyone saw me as that character because that’s how the world knew me. And I also played it even more, which I didn’t even realize until later as a response to trauma from everything I went through,” Hilton said. “So I think it was like, also a mask to protect myself. Just to experience that level of fame at such a young age is very overwhelming.”

So, I think having that character, really, saved me a lot of pain because when people were mean or said things like me, I was like, ‘Oh, it’s not me. It’s just the character.'”
Hilton said that while the world has changed a bit in the two decades since she was first put on the scene, young female celebrities still face backlash.
When DiDario brought up strange things actress Millie Bobby Brown21 years old, as one of today’s young stars who currently the police harsh criticism, Hilton defended her.
“You know, a lot has changed, but there are still people who can’t help themselves. And I think they’re not happy with themselves if they want to, you know, destroy these young women,” Hilton said. “And that’s why I continue to use my voice to make a difference and point that out to others. Hopefully things will change as more people do.”
Hilton went on to praise the Enola Holmes star for how he’s handling fame and its downsides.
“I have so much respect for Millie. I love her so much. We text all the time. She’s so bright, such a strong girl,” he said. “And I’m so impressed with her in every way. And I’m so proud of her. I told her well when I saw that she stood up for herself, I was like, ‘Wow.’ Like I wish I could have done that back in the day.”
