Odessa A’zion is coming out of A24’s upcoming adaptation of the novel Deep cutsjust 48 hours after his casting was announced.
The I love LA star, 25, shared his decision in several Instagram stories posted on Wednesday afternoon, January 28, explaining that he agreed with the criticism of her casting as Zoe Gutiérrez. The character is described in author Holly BrickleyThe book of ‘s as half Mexican and half Jewish.
“Guys!! I’m with ALL of you and I’m not doing this movie,” A’zion wrote, following up with another post that read: “F*** this. I’m out.”
In a later publication, the Martí Suprem the actress said: “Thank you guys for calling me out on this. I AGREE WITH EVERY ONE OF YOU! That’s why I love you.”
“I’m so, so sorry this happened. It’s SO important to me to tell you how it all went – I went looking for Percy, but they offered me Zoe and she instantly said yes!” she continued. “I’m so mad, I hadn’t read the book and I should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before I agreed…and now that I know what I know??? Shit! IT’S GOING ON.”
A’zion wrote: “I would never accept a role from someone else who should. This should! It’s not me. There’s a lot (sic) of people more than capable of playing this role and I’m NOT one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”
“I was so excited that I just said yes, because I knew how much I loved the story, so I just wanted to be a part of it, and so excited to work with this group of people! But shit, never again!” A’zion said.
She added: “I’ve been so busy with other work that I was trying to find time to read again, I wish I could find that time sooner and do his name. That’s all it says in the script when I finally did it. Thank you, thank you. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW!!!”
In another post, A’zion wrote: “I haven’t read the book yet, but the storyline in the script focuses on Percy and Joe, so of course in my initial reading that was my main focus as well. I was happy to be involved as a different role, but I just can’t do it knowing more about Zoe now.”
Based on Brickley’s 2025 novel, the film follows college students Joe and Percy, whose lives become intertwined through a shared passion for music as they pursue Joe’s dream of making it big as an indie musician.
A24 i The Iron Claw director Sean Durkin are adapting the book for the big screen with Cailee Spaeny i Drew Starkey linked to star in the lead roles.
A’zion recently played a prominent role on the contrary Timothée Chalamet to the Oscar nominee Martí Suprem.
“He was on my top five list of actors I’d like to work with,” he said W magazine of working with Chalamet in October 2025. “He was a co-star who I felt understood the shit of the assignment, who knew how to improvise when we needed to improve, he let me challenge him and he challenged me. He had a lot of dialogue. He took it very seriously. I’m like, ‘Maybe I should take things a little more seriously.’
