Protesters in Lagos condemn the destruction of the Makoko floating slum




Nigerian police fired tear gas to disperse residents protesting in Lagos on January 28 over demolition work at one of Africa’s largest floating slums, Makoko, which displaced thousands of people. Lagos state officials, with the help of armed police and excavators, demolished houses claiming residents had illegally built their homes – mostly wooden shacks built on stilts over water – near high-voltage power lines.
