The Sicilian town of Nishemi was declared a “red zone” after a four-kilometer (2.5-mile) section of hillside collapsed on Jan. 25, forcing the evacuation of about 1,500 people. The city, built on unstable terrain, was hit by a powerful storm that hit southern Italy a few days earlier. Although there were no deaths or injuries, experts say the bayou could widen – and topple more houses – when the rains fall again. Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni visited on January 28.
