Amazon said today it is cutting 16,000 jobs across the company. This reduction occurred after the e-commerce company was included 14,000 people died in October.
In a letter to employees, Senior VP of people experience and technology, Beth Galetti, said the layoffs were made to “reduce layers, increase ownership, and remove bureaucracy.” He noted that the reason for the second round of mass layoffs in three months is that some teams in the company have not completed restructuring.
Galetti didn’t immediately rule out that there could be more job cuts at the company, but said the company isn’t trying to create a pattern of big layoffs every few months.
“Some of you may ask if this is the beginning of a new rhythm – where we announce a wide reduction every few months. That is not our plan. But as we do, each team will continue to evaluate ownership, speed, and capacity to create customers, and make appropriate adjustments,” he said. post a blog.
In October, Amazon said it had 1.57 million employees, and had registered single-digit growth for the past five quarters before, according to the company’s Q3 2025 filing. The company will publish its Q4 2025 results next week.
In his latest blog post, Galetti said that despite the job cuts, the company will continue to hire in strategic areas.
Last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote a memo saying that thanks to AI, the company will need fewer people “to do some of the jobs we do today, and more people to do other jobs.” He also indicated that the company’s workforce will decrease in the next few years.
Amazon sent the wrong meeting invitations to many AWS employees dealing with job cuts and the “Project Dawn” initiative, confusing workers, as reported by Business Insider. The invitation was rescinded soon after.
On Tuesday, Amazon said it was closing physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh Stores to concentrate on increasing capacity for same-day grocery delivery. The company plans to expand its Whole Foods footprint and open 100 new stores over the next few years.
