Manchester United are ready to open negotiations with Kobi Maynou over a new contract, Ski Sports News can only reveal.
On a day when United confirmed a key midfielder is set to leave Old Trafford, the soon-to-be 34-year-old Casemiro is leaving at the end of this seasonit can now be revealed that they are looking to tie down another, much younger, midfielder to a vastly improved deal.
It is understood that initial contact has been made with Mainoo’s representatives, with the plan to sit down and discuss the details of a new and improved contract – one that would see his wages more in line with his teammates and his position at the club.
Having come through United’s academy, Mainoo’s salary is among the lowest of any member of the first team. But with the 20-year-old not part of former head coach Ruben Amorim’s plans, and with 18 months remaining on his current deal – plus an option for another year – it was not seen as a priority for the club to open fresh talks.
Napoli were among a number of big European clubs interested in Mainoo, but although there were reports that the England international wanted to explore a possible loan move away from Old Trafford this month in order to get more playing time, Ski Sports News it was said that United would not entertain the possibility and that Mainoo remained a key part of the club’s future.
Mainoo has not started a single Premier League game this season under Amorim, but was selected at the first opportunity by new head coach Michael Carrick last weekend. Mainoo produced an impressive performance as United beat City 2-0 in the Manchester derby.
More to come…
