One suspect remains on the loose two days after Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge 2 Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyerwere shot at their home in Lafayette, Indiana.
Steven and Kimberly were gunned down in broad daylight on Sunday, Jan. 18, by a man who had knocked on their door, according to reports. the guardian. Police were called to the scene around 2:15pm in response to reports of a shooting, and found Steven suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm and Kimberly having been shot in the hip.
After the victims were treated for their injuries, officers recovered pans from the scene.
Lafayette police said the investigation remains active and that local, state and federal agencies are working together to find the shooter. Meanwhile, authorities have not yet released a possible motive for the shooting or a suspect description in the case.
Both Steven and Kimberly were in stable condition as of Monday, January 19th.

justice Loretta H. Rush reacted to the scary incident soon after. “I am deeply grateful that he and his wife Kim are alive after being shot in their home,” Rush, who is Steven’s friend and co-worker, said in a statement obtained by ABC 7 Chicago. “I am very concerned about his health and well-being.”
He added that he is concerned “for the safety of all our judges” in the wake of the Meyers’ target.
“As you work to peacefully resolve more than 1 million cases a year, you must not only feel safe, you must be safe. Any violence against a judge or a judge’s family is completely unacceptable. As public officials, you are dedicated to the rule of law,” Rush continued. “Please be vigilant for your own safety.”
Meanwhile, Kimberly thanked first responders and the community for their support after the shooting.
“I have great confidence in the Lafayette Police Department’s investigation and want to thank all the agencies involved for their work,” he said in a statement shared by police. “We are also incredibly grateful for the support of the community – everyone has been so kind and compassionate. We would also like to thank the medical staff who provided us with care and assistance following the incident.”

Mayor of Lafayette Tony Roswarski also weighed in on the shooting, calling it a “senseless act of violence” and “unacceptable.”
“I want to (assure) the community that all available resources are being used to apprehend the responsible (individual or individuals),” Roswarski added, per NBC news.
The firing came more than a month after Steven announced his plans to step down at the end of his current term. In a December 2025 news releaseconfirmed that he would not seek re-election next November.
“I will forever be grateful to the residents of Tippecanoe County for giving me the privilege of serving them for 35 years (…) I hope they will continue to support women and men of good character who seek to serve with honor, dedication and integrity,” he said at the time.
Steven was first elected as a state member in 2014. He has also served as a member and president of the Lafayette City Council during his career.
