Robert Redfordthe daughter of Amy Redford he has only fond memories of his late father ahead of the first Sundance Film Festival since then his death.
“He was playful, curious and kind,” Amy said today show coaches Laura Jarrett i Peter Alexander on Monday, January 19, sharing a strange insight into what Robert was like as a father. “And I think what he taught us to do is really find what we’re most passionate about and the things that we think could change the world.”
Amy, 55, continued: “The best thing I think he did for my family was to raise us between New York City and the Sundance Mountains, because we lived between the city and natural law, and he taught us a very strong value of stewardship. That’s something I think we all bring to the table to this day, and I’m very proud of that.”
Robert shared four children with his first wife, a historian Lola Van WaugenSons Scott, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in 1959, and James, who died of cancer aged 58 in 2020, as well as daughters Shauna, 65, and Amy. This year’s Sundance will be held in honor of Robert, who co-founded the festival in 1978 as a way to showcase independent filmmakers. It will be the first Sundance since the Sting The star died in her sleep at home in September 2025 at the age of 89.
Amy noted in Monday’s interview that her father once said he had been advised not to start the festival, but ultimately chose not to listen to the naysayers.
“If you tell it not to do it, it means it’s not done yet,” he said. “He decided, ‘Well, I’ve got a platform and I’m going to use it to change the world.’ And I think knowing that there were so many stories that needed to be told, that weren’t being told, and that there were incredible storytellers that hadn’t been seen yet was really his most fundamental motivation.”
The Sundance Kid. Bob Woodward. Hubbell Gardiner. These are just a few of the roles Robert Redford played in his impressive seven-decade career, and that’s just scratching the surface. Amy, who, like her late father, is an actor and director, shared that Robert never thought about making his mark on the world.
“I wasn’t a person to look over my shoulder,” he explained. “I think his legacy is really about moving forward, and I think he can do things like founding The Redford Center with my late brother Jamie Redford, being able to know that all the artists who went through the Sundance Institute might one day come out into the public sphere as Ryan Coogler i Chloe Zhao and all the people who come and celebrate that the organization is moving forward”.
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will be held from January 22 to February 1 in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah.
