Russell, the WBA junior welterweight title, is awaiting a first defense against strong challenger Andy Hiraoka. The fight is not over. Russell was scheduled to meet Hiraoka last November before the fight was canceled, but Russell has yet to receive a confirmed date for his first defense.
“I beat him. This is a tournament in Georgia. I got him, but I want to see him professionally,” Russell said of Ortiz. “But first, he has to get through Keyshawn. I have to introduce this guy, Andy Hiraoka.”
Russell pushed back against the idea that a win over Ortiz would carry the weight limit for Davis, describing Ortiz as a fighter who is often underestimated.
“For all of you saying Keyshawn has no weight if he beats this guy, that’s a lie,” Russell said. “He’s a sleeper. This guy sleeps. He can fight.”
A win for Ortiz would immediately change the status quo at 140 pounds, putting him closer to the title picture and directly in the conversation with belt holders.
Russell’s comments came a few days after he was placed fifth in The Ring’s updated junior welterweight rankings released on January 15. Dalton Smith was promoted to the top spot after his knockout of Subriel Matias, a decision that drew criticism from fans who questioned Russell’s status due to his recent work.
Russell still needs a date for his legal defense. Ortiz still has Keyshawn Davis in front of him. Until those fights are over, any talk beyond that will remain conditional.
