Pape Gueie’s extra-time stunner secured Senegal’s second African Cup of Nations success after a dramatic and controversial 1-0 win over Morocco.
Gueye’s strike in the fourth minute of extra time settled a final that was filled with controversy.
It came after dramatic scenes in stoppage time when Senegal coach Pape Tiaw, also angered by his side’s disallowed goal, led his Senegal players off the pitch following the decision to award the Atlas Lions a controversial last-gasp penalty.
The clock was ticking down to the last minute of the allotted eight minutes of stoppage time when El Hadji Malik Diouf was adjudged to have pulled down Brahim Diaz in the penalty area.
Chaos erupted at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat after referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty following a VAR check on the pitch monitor, with no one knowing how the game would end as Senegal temporarily refused to finish the game.
With the clock still ticking, after some encouragement from Sadio Mane, Senegal’s players rallied again in the 20th minute of stoppage time, but incredibly, Diaz’s poorly taken Panenka penalty was saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
That sent the final into extra time where Gueie won the trophy for Senegal.
More to come.
