Threads out X in mobile users every day, new data shows

A report from a market intelligence company Similarweb shows that Meta’s Threads now has more daily uses than Elon Musk’s X on mobile devices. While X still dominates Utas on the web, Utas mobile apps for iOS and Android have continued to add daily active users over the past few months.

Similarweb data shows that Threads has 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android as of January 7, 2026, after months of growth, while X has 125 million daily active users on mobile devices.

This appears to be the result of a long-term trend, rather than a reaction to the recent X controversy, where users were found to be using the platform’s integrated AI, Grok, to create nude images of women without consent, including, sometimes minors. Concerns about deepfake images have now caught the eye of California’s attorney general to open an investigation to Grok, after similar investigations by other regions, like EnglandEU, India, Brazil, and many more.

Drama in X also led to the start of the social network Bluesky to see the increase in the app installation in the new day.

However, Utas’ push in daily mobile use may have been driven by other factors, including cross-promotion from Meta’s larger social apps like Facebook and Instagram (where Utas is regularly advertised to existing users), a focus on creators, and rapid new features. Over the past year, Utas has added features like interest based community, a better filter, DMs, long text, missing postand it’s gone game testing spotted.

Combined, the increase in daily active users suggests that more people are using Threads on mobile as a more regular habit.

According to Meta’s official numbers, the tech giant said in August 2025 that Threads has reaching more than 400 million per month active user. The company was then notified in October last year that thread has 150 million active users per day.

The growth trend has continued for several months. Similarweb last heat reported that Utas is closing the gap with X on mobile devices after seeing 127.8% year-over-year growth at the end of June 2025.

Relatedly, Similarweb observes that X is still ahead of Thread in the US, but the gap is narrowing. A year ago, X had twice as many daily active users in the US as it does today.

In addition, Utas has little traction on the web while X maintains a fairly steady web audience with around 150 million web visits per day, according to Similarweb data. As of earlier this week (January 13), X saw 145.4 million web visits per day, while Threads saw 8.5 million web visits per day on Threads.com and Threads.net combined.
