Toothless Newcastle seized the chance to move up to fifth in the Premier League with an underwhelming result as they drew 0-0 against Wolves.
The Magpies failed to get a shot on target until the 85th minute at a wet and windy Molineux, as Nick Waltmeade and Jolinton missed good aerials as Eddie Howe’s side failed to convert 66 per cent of possession into anything meaningful in the final third. A late shot wide by Bruno Guimaraes summed up the performance.
There was a back row that Jolinton just couldn’t convert in the first half and Kieran Trippier found the side netting with a free-kick after the break, but it was another tame away game from Newcastle. They have won just two of their 11 away games this term.
In contrast, the fighting efforts of Wolves – who are now unbeaten in four in the Premier League – were warmly appreciated by the home support. This was another positive step forward for Rob Edwards’ side, following their big FA Cup win over Shrewsbury last weekend.
They may be 14 points away from safety, but they are saving their pride.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s up-and-down campaign continues to frustrate. They move into eighth place, ahead of rivals Sunderland on goal difference.
Newcastle draw another empty seat
It was Newcastle’s fourth goalless draw of the Premier League season, four times more than they had in the previous two league campaigns combined (one in 2024/25, 0 in 2023/24).
The Voltemade striker has now scored just twice in his last 13 appearances, while another striker, Anthony Gordon, is on a run of one goal in 10 matches.
Redknapp: Two points down for Newcastle – they need to take more risks
Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp:
“There’s that bit of belief (away). At home, the crowd plays a big role and the atmosphere and the players play maybe a bit more on the front end.”
“A certain cross that comes into the box today, you think, ‘lads, get to the end’. Good balls from the right, the left. But the forwards are not gambling. They are not taking enough risks at the moment.
“Two points fell.
“Rob Edwards is probably delighted with that. We keep it going. Of course he would like three points. He is learning about his players, who want to be here next year.”
