Nacho Elvira took advantage of Shane Lowry’s last-hole mistake and Rory McIlroy’s attack on Sunday to claim a dramatic victory at the DP World Tour Dubai Invitational.
Elvira took a two-stroke lead into the final day at the Dubai Creek Resort and briefly extended her lead to three before a stumble at the front and ninth saw the chasing pack level with the Spaniard.
McIlroy came back from six back to share the lead after a five-birdie run, while Lowry, Marcus Armitage and Daniel Hillier also sat atop the leaderboard during an outstanding week.
Lowry took a solo lead and stayed one ahead until he found the water on his final hole, with a double bogey to drop him to eight under, while Elvira birdied her penultimate hole and par on the last to close out a one-shot victory.
Elvira carded a two-under 69 to finish the week at 10 under and claim a third DP World Tour title, with Hillier tied for second ahead of McIlroy, Lowry, David Puig and Julien Guerrier.
