Nick, 32, was placed under guardianship for a year, according to a report on Thursday, January 15 The New York Times. The outlet reported that the conservatorship ended in 2021 and had been managed by an authorized trustee. Steven Baer.
“(Mental illness) is a widely understood epidemic,” Baer told the outlet.. “This is a horrible tragedy.”
No further details about Nick’s guardianship have been shared publicly. Us Weekly has reached out for comment.
Nick has previously been open about his mental health and addiction struggles.
“They refused to give me medication because they were like, ‘You don’t need any medication,'” Nick recalled of a previous stint in rehab during a 2015 appearance. on the “Dopey” podcast. “I was freaking out. I was like, ‘How do I show these motherfuckers that I’m crazy?’ Then I said, “I’ll throw a rock through a window.”
He continued, “I picked up a rock and started down the road, and I was going up this hill… and I went and threw the rock out the window. A woman saw me and hit me and then they put me on (an antidepressant called) Wellbutrin.”
Nick was arrested in December 2025 after parents Rob and Michele were found dead in their home in Los Angeles. They were 78 and 70, respectively.
While Nick is in police custody, he has yet to enter a statement. His arraignment hearing was postponed earlier this month after defense counsel Alan Jackson he abruptly withdrew from the case.
“I’m legally and ethically prohibited from explaining all the reasons why, I know it’s a question on everyone’s mind,” Jackson told reporters earlier this month after leaving office.
Jackson further emphasized that he remained “deeply committed” to supporting Nick’s “best interests.”
“In fact, we know, not only are we convinced, we know that the legal process will reveal the true facts of the circumstances surrounding Nick’s case,” Jackson said. “What we’ve learned, and you can take this to the bank, is that under California law, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”
Nick is now represented by the LA Public Defender Kimberly Greene.
“I spoke briefly with Mr. Reiner this morning,” Greene he told reporters on January 7. “I understood that there would be a change of adviser. We have not had any in-depth discussions.”
Greene also revealed that she has had “no contact” with Nick’s family since taking on the case.
In addition to Nick, Rob and Michele are survived by children Jake and Romy Reiner. (Rob was also the adoptive father of his late ex-wife Penny MarshallTracy’s daughter.)
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” Jake and Romy. said in a joint statement last month “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. We are grateful for the condolences, kindness and support we have received not only from family and friends, but from people from all walks of life.”
Nick is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, February 23.
