Canelo Set September 12 Return to Riyadh

“It will be a surprise,” said Alalshikh X. “It was a big, big, big fight. Mexico against the world. This is the first card for Canelo Promotions.

The fight is scheduled for Mexican Independence weekend and will mark the first event promoted under the Alvarez banner. No weight category or official classification has been confirmed, although Alalshikh said the main event is expected to include a world champion.

Alvarez has not fought since his September 2025 loss to Terence Crawford. Crawford’s eventual retirement ended any chance of a rematch and left many of the super middleweight belts unsettled, opening up more avenues for Alvarez’s return.

The sign “Mexico against the world” raised speculation about an international protestor. One of the names that continues to appear is Hamzah Sheeraz, a developing competitor from the United Kingdom that Alalshikh previously praised should have a big opportunity in 2026. His background and timing match the topic being promoted.

Chris Eubank Jr. Riyadh Season has also been linked to talks involving Alvarez. The matchup will be affordable, though it will require a move outside of the super middleweight mold.

Other possibilities remain speculative. David Benavidez continues to be mentioned in the future of Alvarez, although putting him under a “world” banner is a stretch of the mentioned topic. A revenge attempt against Dmitry Bivol has also been threatened, although the weight of the reviews hinders that path.

For now, the date and location are locked. There is no enemy. That uncertainty seems intentional.
