John Harbaugh has agreed to become the new coach of the New York Giants, and the former leader of the Baltimore Ravens is finalizing a five-year contract with the four-time Super Bowl champion.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the two sides are finalizing a deal that would make Harbaugh “one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.”
New York, which fired Brian Daboll in November, hosted Harbaugh for his first official in-person interview with the team on Wednesday, with the 63-year-old Giants’ No. 1 pick taking over the team.
After 18 years at the helm of the Ravens, winning one Super Bowl during the 2012 season, Harbaugh was fired two days after Baltimore’s Week 18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the AFC North title and final conference playoff berth.
The Ravens made the playoffs 12 times during Harbaugh’s 18 seasons at the helm, but finished their 2025 campaign at 8-9, well short of preseason Super Bowl expectations.
Harbaugh’s list of suitors continued to be large, however, with the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans also courting him. They were reportedly sending a contingent to Baltimore to interview Harbaugh on Thursday morning, before news of the Giants’ deal was made public.
Harbaugh ended up granting his younger brother Jim’s wish, as the Los Angeles Chargers head coach predicted that any team John coached in 2026 would be “awesome,” but he hoped it would be an NFC team.
That again raises the possibility of a Super Bowl clash between the sibling coaches, with John beating Jim in his only Super Bowl victory when the current Chargers coach was leading the San Francisco 49ers.
