Better MedicineThe love triangle is building to a big reveal when Mark finally notices Martin and Louisa growing romance
“The fun part about playing a character like Mark is that he’s unabashedly serious. It allows you a couple of blind spots so you can keep playing it straight,” Segarra, 39, explained during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. “One of the big blind spots I think he has this season is that he doesn’t see the tension between Doc and Louisa.”
Season 1 will address the connection of the fictional couple.
“When it’s finally revealed that they’re sparking a little romance, I think it hits him like a ton of bricks,” Segarra noted. “It’s been really fun to play because throughout the journey, you’ll see Mark fall in love with his new best friend: Dr. Martin Best.”
He continued: “So it helps when he falls off the cliff at the end and we had a lot of fun filming that day.”
Better Medicine follow a doctor who “moves from the city of Boston, Massachusetts to a small practice in the East Coast fishing village where he spent his childhood vacations,” according to the official synopsis.
Josh Charles plays Dr. Martin Best, while Segarra, Abigail Spencer, Cree Cicchino, Annie Potts, Didi Conn, Clea Lewis, Stephen Spinella, Jason Veasey, Cindy De La Cru, John DiMaggio, Carter Shimp and cast member of the dog Wattson complete the rest of the cast.

“They’ve found a way to put Mark in a lot of crazy situations, and that’s what I’m having the most fun with every time I read a script and realized, ‘Oh, they had Mark in this weird thing.’ That’s my jam,” shared Segarra. “You’ll see a lot of really fun quirky events happening at Port Wenn where we have a lot of traditions that we’ll be introducing to watchers. I’m excited to get involved in some shenanigans.”
Segarra recalled having a great time carry Mark — and Port If – in life
“You’re going to see him cry, you’re going to see him laugh, you’re going to see him really hurt, and you’re going to see him try to take care of other people,” she hinted. “They get hurt really bad. You’ll see him doing some detective work with Dr. Best. I’m excited for everyone to go on the trip with us.”
Looking forward, viewers will learn more about fan favorite Sheriff Mark.
“He loves his job. I think he’s really good at his job. But I’ll also say he has a little too much fun with his job,” she shared. “He doesn’t even have a gun, so I don’t think Port Wenn is necessarily the toughest, and that’s why he loves it. He just has a little more fun. He gets some cats out of the trees and I don’t think there’s too much noise. But he’s a fixture in town and you’ll see him get a little dirty this season with that element that has him way down.” he’s been preparing for his whole life.”
Mark’s love life will play a big role in the first season. “I think Mark looks in the mirror every morning and says to himself, ‘Come on, hot summer,'” Segarra joked. “There’s a really funny reveal where I think every available woman in town is lining up (to go out with him). I think he’s doing everything he can to get over the love of his life.”
Better Medicine airs Tuesdays on Fox at 8 pm ET.
