Chock and Bates, who first partnered during the 2011-2012 figure skating season, began dating in 2017.
“We really fell in love on the ice and became close,” Bates said explained exclusively Us Weekly in February 2018, he noted that he had a crush on Chock when they were teenagers. “I love her personality. I love her zest for life.”
Bates and Chock have continued to search for gold at the Olympic gameswhich affects their romance.
“When we’re training, we kind of lead a quiet life,” he said we. “We stay home a lot and go to bed early!”
After five years together, Bates proposed in June 2022 during a holiday in Thailand. As they prepare for their 2024 wedding, they still enjoy skating together in competitions.
“We still love what we do and enjoy the process,” Chock said Olympics.com in 2023. “Having to work day in and day out over the years, you have to be in love with the process. That’s something we’ve done and we still have those feelings.”

2011
The pair first partnered during the 2011 season. (Bates previously placed 11th at the 2010 Olympics with then-partner Emily Samuelson.)
Years later, Chock did NBC Sports that she and Bates “got along really well” even before competing together, and said they had “good chemistry from the beginning.”
2017
In the midst of their professional careers, Bates and Chock began dating.

2018
They adopted two toy poodles together, Stella and Henry.
“Our dogs look just like us! My dog is blonde and has curly hair, her dog is black and has very different eyebrows,” Bates. he joked we that February “We have very nice dogs. They are amazing!”
February 2022
Chock and Bates competed together in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Olympics. They were named co-captains of the 2022 ice skating team during the Beijing tournament.

June 2022
“Left the house with my boyfriend, come back with my fiance! 🥰❤️❤️❤️,” she wrote via Instagram, confirming that Bates had popped the question.
January 2024
They won their first Grand Prix Final title in December 2023, a month before they officially became Olympic gold medalists.
Chock, Bates and the rest of Team USA had initially finished second behind the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the team figure skating event. After a long investigation, the star athlete of the ROC Kamil Valiev he was disqualified for doping, leading Team USA to take home the gold.
“It’s been very unexpected,” Chock said to the today show during an interview with Bates and his colleagues. “We didn’t have a lot of information and people were always asking us… I didn’t realize how much it had weighed on me, and probably weighed on all of us, until we heard (heard) the news. It almost felt like a weight had been lifted to feel this close to the Beijing games.”
June 2024
Bates and Chock were married June 20 in the bride’s native Hawaii, they later explained people about the traditions of the ceremony.
“Laws represent the unity and union of separate elements to make a whole greater than the sum of its parts,” Chock said. “In marriage, you come together as individuals to create a partnership together.”
January 2025
Chock and Bates won their sixth US Ice Dance Championships on January 24, tying the record for most wins by an American team with retired skaters. Meryl Davis i Charlie White.

March 2025
The pair made history by taking home their third consecutive gold medal at the 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, becoming the first pair to do so in nearly three decades.
“It still feels a little surreal, honestly. I think it’s going to take a while to sink in,” Chock said of his success during a joint interview with today. “But we had the best time. Those were our two best performances that we could have done, and we’re very happy that we executed them at the World Championships. There’s no better place.”
Noting that she and Bates are “very excited for next season,” Chock said the 2026 Winter Olympics will mark her “last” season of skating. “We’ve had such an incredible last three years of skating and growing and learning so much about ourselves,” she shared. “And we’re really looking forward to taking on this final chapter and putting all our hearts and minds into achieving our goals.”
January 2026
In an exclusive interview with Us, Bates recalled the moment when something changed in their professional relationship.
“We skated together for five years and it was just a friendship, but the friendship was good,” Bates said. “From day one we always had a connection. We laughed, enjoyed our time together. It was a lot of fun skating. During the five years, we were successful, but we were also unsuccessful. We had a lot of hard times. In those difficult times, I realized how much she trusted Maddie and felt connected to her in a way that went beyond as a skating partner.”
He continued, “I remember thinking, ‘I really can’t imagine one day leaving the track and going our separate ways, being friends and just not seeing each other anymore. I made the realization, I shared the realization, and thankfully the realization was reciprocated. That changed everything about our relationship and our partnership.”
Chock admitted that his revelation “came out of nowhere.”
“I knew we always had amazing chemistry,” she said. “We had a lot of fun together. We were great friends. Training was always fun because we always got along. We had the same work ethic. But when he told me how he felt, I was really surprised because I didn’t see it coming at all.”
Chock continued, “When I really sat down and thought about it, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I feel the same way about you. This is amazing.'”
