Google Classroom’s new tool uses Gemini to turn lessons into podcast episodes

Google already introduced a new way to attract students who love to listen to podcasts. Now available in Google Classroom, teachers can use a new Gemini-powered tool that produces podcast-style audio lessons, intended to promote a deeper understanding of educational material.

To get started, educators simply go to the Gemini tab in Google Classroom. There, they can select a variety of customization options, such as choosing the appropriate grade level, defining a topic, and setting clear learning goals. They can then make the audio experience more personal by choosing the number of speakers or choosing a different style of conversation, such as an interview, a roundtable discussion, or a casual dialogue.

This new feature is now available to users who subscribe to Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus.

By bringing this familiar format into the classroom, teachers can engage students’ interests. Research shows that students spend a significant amount of time listening to podcasts, with estimates 35 million Monthly listenership of Gen Z in the US

Additionally, the popularity of podcasts as an educational resource has grown rapidly; Many universities now produce their own podcasts, and students are increasingly seeking out popular educational series in their own time. Podcast-style lessons can also encourage independent learning, as students can replay episodes whenever they need a refresher or miss a class.

However, teachers still struggle with integrating AI tools into their teaching practices. Many teachers have expressed concern about students’ reliance on generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to complete assignments.

Google encourages teachers to practice responsible AI and to carefully review and, if necessary, edit all AI-generated content to ensure accuracy and appropriateness for specific classroom contexts and local policies.

Gemini for Class was first launched in 2024, and Google has continued to add new features since then. Most recently, the company rolled out a major update Last June, it included features that help teachers brainstorm, develop lesson plans, and organize instructional materials for students.
