Ramon Rodríguez breaks his silence following the season 4 premiere of Will Trent ended with the death of the main character.
During the Tuesday, January 6 episode of the hit ABC series, Will (Rodríguez) was taken hostage by James Ulster (Greg German) after the criminal’s prison break. Ulster told Will that in order to evade the authorities, they had to die. Cut to the final scene, where a burning car—with two passengers— he seemed to hint The disappearance of James and Will.
“Look, the reality is, ‘Could we kill off our main character (when the show’s) name is Will Trent? It’s not likely,” Rodriguez, 46, said exclusively. Us Weekly. “But when I read the script, I loved that ending. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s exciting.'”
Rodríguez noted that although Will survived“the stakes are very high” for the character and the series since he’s still missing.
“There’s a lot of question marks, and I think it’s going to be really fun for people when they get into the next episode and see what really happened. We’re continuing this thing again where Will has to navigate his moral compass,” continued the actor, who also directed Tuesday’s premiere. “He’s someone who always does things the right way by the book and now he can start questioning and doubting those things again as he explores emotions that he hasn’t really tapped into very often.”
Based on a book by Karin Slaughter, Will Trent follows a Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent who was abandoned at birth and grew up in Atlanta’s overcrowded foster care system. Will now relies on his unique perspective as he pursues justice, leading to the highest clearance rate at the GBI.
Season 3 concluded with Will meeting his father while dealing with his ex Angie (Erika Christensen) expecting a baby with her boyfriend and Amanda (dream son) near death. After a time jump, Will was seen still processing his mixed emotions about the changes in his life.
“There’s a lot that we see in this first episode that’s going to be open and have to be figured out. His relationship with Angie, who’s pregnant, and this charged history that they have. Are they able to navigate (that) as friends? They’ve always been on-again, off-again, but is this traumatic bond still going on?” teased Rodriguez. “So there’s a lot of fun stuff that we can play and explore.”
Will’s tumultuous history with Ulster will also be explored.
“We see her manipulative ways and she tries to get into Will’s head. There’s going to be some fun twists and some fun revelations in this second episode,” he continued. “So obviously the rest of the season we have some new romances, and maybe some old ones. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Rodríguez she opened up about Will exploring his anger.
“It’s something that we haven’t really seen too much of him. For someone with such a history-laden past, he’s really getting into therapy for the first time. Then a lot of things start to come out of him. So we were very interested and intrigued by the idea of someone breaking down and taking the hood off to see what he’s telling us in there.” “The therapy process, I’ve been through it and it’s interesting what comes up. It can be good or it can be complicated. It can trigger things.”
Rodriguez promised viewers that they would see a new side of Will, adding: “For someone like Will that really hasn’t taken long to do, considering what he’s been through, he’s always moving forward and focusing on his work. He’s staying busy because that’s been some of his coping mechanisms and now finally meeting a therapist that’s a little unconventional, but maybe someone would like his tactic a little bit.”
He concluded, “I love that we took what we’ve seen a million times before in movies and shows, which is therapy, and we said, ‘How can we make it really different and give it the Will Trent twist that we’re trying to do?’ I loved it.”
