Better Medicine has Abigail Spencer caught in a fictitious love triangle between Josh Charles i Josh Segarra — but how will it continue to play out on the screen?
While talking exclusively with Us Weekly during a fixed visit, Spencer, 44, discussed how Better Medicine differs from Doctor Martinwhich is the inspiration for the Fox show.
“A lot of it is in the calibration of the writing. I think (executive producer) Liz Tuccillo is doing a great job. You’ll see differences from the original Doc Martin. That show wasn’t really built on a love triangle with a will, they won’t,” noted Spencer, who plays Louisa. “It’s a lot more spread and earned. I think big TV is the will, they won’t. So how do you credibly do that over time and navigate that?”
The actress praised the show for having a heartwarming story.
“It’s great. It’s inherent in the scripts. It’s just finding those details. Like Liz and I worked out, ‘When do you go from calling Dr. Best to Martin because of that familiarity?'” Spencer recalled. “So we’re still navigating that. But I love that the detail is always at the fore. I think hopefully that’s what people will feel is that nuance.”
Better Medicinewhich is broadcast on Tuesday, January 6 follow a doctor who “He moves from the city of Boston, Massachusetts to a small practice in the East Coast fishing village where he spent his vacations as a child,” according to the official synopsis.

“Everyone loves Louisa. She’s the school teacher in town. I’d say she’s also the storm in town,” Spencer told Us . “Louisa has always followed the rules, done the right thing, and shook things up by calling off her eight-year engagement to the sheriff.”
spencer implied that Louisa’s recent decisions will be “disruptive to the town” of Port Wenn, adding, “It’s fun to see her at an interesting point in her life. It gives her space to meet someone new… But there’s an inherent conflict in the fact that they just broke up and then see each other all the time because the town is so small.”
He continued: “They’re also best friends, so I think it’s painful. They love each other and they’re like two peas in a pod. But maybe they’re not right for each other romantically.”
There is also Dr. Martin Best of Charles, which is drawn in Louisa after moving to Port Wenn. Outside of her personal life, Louisa will grow up as a school teacher in the city.
“There’s a big reveal of Louisa’s promotion, potentially. That’s what I like about it is that something really good can happen, but also something bad at the same time, which is fun and how everyone deals with it,” he hinted. “You see her a lot at school. You see her with people and it’s really a community — you see people interacting. People do things together, but you can’t walk away from everyone. The show is really about community. How do you navigate relationships, positive and negative, and keep them healthy?”
Better Medicine airs Tuesdays on Fox at 8 pm ET.
