J Police find 3 bodies after shooting man carrying kits outside home


After police shot and killed a man who was throwing a machete outside a New Jersey home Monday afternoon, Jan. 5, officers went inside, where they found three bodies. Us Weekly has confirmed

The fatal incident took place around 5:30 p.m. in the town of Piscataway. Police have not yet released the names of any of the dead.

A source close to the investigation said Us Weekly that the man with a machete charged at the arriving officers, who tried to subdue him with tasers. But that move didn’t work, and police fatally shot the man as he continued to advance toward them.

Police say they have recovered the machete the man was holding, the source confirmed.

Piscataway prosecutors and police could not be reached for further details Tuesday.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community,” Piscataway police said in a Facebook post about the police-involved shooting. “At this time, there is no danger to the general public. Additional information will be shared as necessary and the investigation allows. We appreciate (the) community’s cooperation.”

WABC is reporting that two of the victims found inside the house were the grandparents of the man carrying the machete. Authorities later confirmed this detail and said the third person killed was the mother of the man wielding the machete.

NJ.com reported that the police and ambulances from several surrounding towns attended the scene.

In a statement to X, New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association President Peter Andreyev said his organization was “aware of the horrific crime in Middlesex County tonight. All of our members involved are being evaluated. Thank you to everyone who came out to offer support.”

Authorities have not discussed the possible causes of death for the three people found dead inside the residence.

Neighbors spoke to WABC Monday night about what they heard and saw.

“I was almost about to start making dinner, and then I just heard the cops coming next door,” neighbor Jessica Conroy he said “I looked out the window and they had their guns drawn, and then we heard the gunshots.”

Neighbor Keith Heron said one of the victims was a “very nice woman” and said the neighborhood is generally quiet. “It’s so tragic that something like this would happen,” Heron said.

News 12 New Jersey spoke with a neighbor who said they heard several gunshots Monday around 6 p.m., shortly after police arrived on the street.

News 12 also said several police officers were taken from the scene to an area hospital for evaluation, but all were expected to be OK.

Police said they are continuing their investigation.
