A Colorado Olympic hopeful is facing charges after he allegedly fatally stabbed an Uber driver 60 times with a kitchen knife inside his car.
Khayla Dawson claimed he was going on a “joy ride” when he scheduled a chauffeured Uber pickup Jeremy Campbell on October 26, 2025, according to year arrest affidavit filed by El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and viewed by Us Weekly.
Dawson, 27, claimed she fell asleep in Campbell’s 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe and was trying to “sexually assault” her when she woke up. She went on to claim that she “defended herself by stabbing him,” according to the affidavit.
A preliminary hearing in the case took place on Friday, Jan. 2, in which prosecutors and experts said Dawson stabbed Campbell approximately 60 times before she dumped her body in a field and fled in her vehicle, according to reports. The Gazette.
A police detective reportedly challenged Dawson’s claim that Campbell “assaulted” her again, with the detective claiming that Campbell was partially paralyzed on her right side. The officer argued that Campbell, who was partially paralyzed, made Dawson’s claim of being attacked by the driver implausible.
Meanwhile, Dawson’s defense attorney expressed concern about his mental health and shared a past incident in which he acted irrationally during a meeting with a real estate agent.
Dawson’s lawyer argued that she might have felt uncomfortable being alone in a car with a “strange man in the middle of the night”, because KKTV.
However, prosecutors accused Dawson of planning the attack and noted that she took the kitchen knife and a pair of gloves with her before getting into Campbell’s vehicle.
“Khayla told (police) she ordered an Uber last night because she doesn’t have her own car and ‘felt locked in’ and ‘wanted to get out of the house,'” the affidavit said. “She told (police) she fell asleep in the backseat of the car and woke up feeling the driver reach over to touch her.”
After the affidavit noted he allegedly defended himself, he claimed Campbell accelerated the car “through a barbed wire fence and into a field with horses.”
Prosecutors said Dawson stabbed Campbell all over his body, with injuries to the back of his head, right shoulder, right side of his face, chin, neck and hands. Police added that the injuries appeared to be “defensive”.
Once the car stopped, Dawson allegedly got out and pulled Campbell out of the Hyundai. He then reportedly got into the driver’s seat and drove his car to her apartment.
After Campbell’s father reported her missing, authorities were able to locate her car and it was found in the parking lot of Dawson’s apartment building.
“(Deputies) advised there was blood splatter on the front passenger window, front passenger seat, dashboard, center console, driver’s seat and steering wheel,” the affidavit said. “There was also a large pool of blood on the floor just behind the driver’s seat. On the outside of the driver’s door was a small pool of blood possibly mixed with saliva.”
Authorities searched the area and found Campbell’s phone at the bottom of a staircase, and were able to determine Dawson’s last ride of the night. Police soon discovered that he lives in the apartment building where the car was parked.
Deputies then visited Dawson’s apartment to question her about what happened, which is when she shared her experience with the “attempted sexual assault,” according to the affidavit. Authorities executed a search warrant for Dawson’s residence and found Campbell’s car key fob inside a dryer sheet box, as well as his wallet and Colorado driver’s license.
She was arrested and charged with first degree murder, aggravated robbery and motor vehicle theft. She is currently being held without bail, according to online records reviewed by Us Weekly.
Dawson is scheduled to return to court on March 6, with his trial set to begin on April 13.
Before his arrest, Watson was slated to compete at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials in Oregon in the shot put, according to reports. THE MANAT.
