Myles Garrett celebrates with family after breaking NFL record for catch


Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Myles Garrett took some time to celebrate with his family after breaking the NFL’s single-season rushing record.

Garrett recorded his 23rd sack of the season in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ 20-18 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Jan. 4, surpassing the mark of 22.5 sacks previously set by the Pro Football Hall of Famer. Michael Strahan in 2001 and equaled by the Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher TJ Watt in 2021.

After the game, Garrett, 30, he ran to his friends and family in the crowd, giving hugs and kisses to celebrate the historic moment.

“I can’t wait to go see (my family),” Garrett he told CBS Amanda Balion after the match “Whenever I break from here, I’m going to jump into the stands. They’ve supported me every step of the way. I’m so blessed and lucky to have them.”

The record shutout came with just five minutes left in the final game of the season. Garrett admitted to Balionis that he was “nervous as hell” about missing the puck.

“I had a dream last night that I didn’t get it, and all the feelings that come with that,” Garrett said. “I woke up, I think I was sweating, and I said there’s no way I’m going to let this be my fate. So fight like hell to not only rewrite history, but my own destiny.”

After pressuring the Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow for much of the game, Garrett finally came out late. After the looting, he raised his hands in relief, then was swarmed by his comrades. Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris he was so happy that he even gave one of the referees a high five in a funny moment.

His parents were seen hugging in the crowd.

“I didn’t know it was going to be like this,” Garrett said of the celebration. “I’m so happy to be with these guys. They make it a joy to come to work every day. I’ve loved every second of this year, being able to work with guys like this, coaches like this, it’s honestly been a real pleasure.”

Garrett was the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year and is the heavy favorite to win it again this season. He is the first player in NFL history to record at least 12 sacks in six straight seasons and has had at least 10 sacks in eight straight years.

The Browns finish the season 5-12 and have been eliminated from the playoffs since Week 14. Despite the lost season, the team rallied around Garrett’s quest for history in recent weeks.

In November, Garrett and the Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim made public his relationship with a kiss before the game before the Browns game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kim, 25, is a two-time gold medalist.

Rumors about the star athletes’ relationship began swirling in May when the two were spotted together on the red carpet at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo, where Kim was hosting.

In August, Kim visited Garrett at Browns training camp and shared photos on her Instagram story. A month later, she shared a carousel of photos via Instagram, one of which appeared to show Garrett’s back.
