The first stop on Lionel Messi’s tour erupted into riots as fans poured into stadiums and waterlogged Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium.
Supporters paid up to 12,000 rupees (£100; $133) to catch a glimpse of the football star, but were left disappointed by a large group of officials and security.
When security stoned him after 20 minutes, some in the crowd were visibly upset.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was “difficult and shocked” by the events.
