Google is testing AI-Towered article summaries on participating publications’ Google News Pages as part of a new pilot program, the search giant announced on Wednesday.
News advertising participating in the pilot program includes and select, Infobae, Kompas, The Washington Exami, and Post Washington, and washington post.
The goal of the new commercial partnership program is to “explore how AI can empower active audiences,” Google said in a blog post. As part of the new Ai Pilot Program, companies will be able to experiment with new features in Google News.
By adding an article summary, Google says users will get context before clicking to read an article. While ai-generation summaries can lead to clicks on news articles, publications that participate in the commercial pilot program will receive direct payments from Google, which can influence traffic on the site.
AI-Towers Artist Summary will be displayed on the page of the publication participating in ‘Google News, and not elsewhere in Google News or search.
This isn’t the first time Google has introduced an AI Summary for news. In July, The company that rolled Rolled AI in Findmain news feed in Google search app. With this change, users can no longer see a single title from the main publication in the feed. Instead, they see a logo about the news publisher in the upper left corner, followed by an ai-generation summary that mentions the source
Google is also experimenting with audio summaries for people who prefer listening to news rather than reading it, as part of a new pilot program.

The company says the feature will include clear attribution and links to articles.

“As the way people use information evolves, we will continue to improve our products for people around the world and engage with feedback from stakeholders in the ecosystem,” Google wrote in a blog post. “We do this work in collaboration with websites and creators of all sizes, from major news publications to new and emerging voices.”
