French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s second government may be hanging in the balance after the lower house of the French parliament rejected a wealth tax as expected. The so-called Zutzman tax, proposed by the left, would impose a minimum tax of 2 percent on wealth above 100 million euros and would respond to widespread public support for requiring the country’s wealthiest to do their part in tackling France’s growing debt. MPs have struggled to reach consensus on the issue, however, and the French left is now warning the government to find an alternative solution – or face another no-confidence vote.
