According to reports from multiple news outlets, Columbia University may be reaching a deal with the Trump administration to restore federal funds on civil rights issues.
The deal will require Colombia to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to people affected by the so-called violation Washington Free Beacon According to reports, the Wall Street Journal reported.
In return, the university will restore about $400 million in federal grants and contracts.
According to media reports, the deal does not include some of the stricter regulations originally requested by the White House, such as the consent decree and reforms to Colombia’s governance structure. According to Free Beacon, the White House also abandoned its demands, with a presidential search committee replacing interim university president Claire Shipman including people with various political views.
A spokesman for the university said the school is working to discuss with the federal government, but noted that there is no resolution yet.
Any such deal is an unprecedented arrangement between the federal government and elite universities. It could set a precedent for deals with other university president Donald Trump, including Harvard.
